The Ruined Abbey

Ok well I am nearly there and the store is very nearly ready for opening. With that in mind I thought it might be an idea to post some of the new builds.

First up is The Ruined Abbey.

I built this on a whim. If you know my stuff you will also know that I tend to like detail but like to build ‘clean’ builds. I am not really one for grunge or even industrial styles. However these styles are very popular. For every person that wants a swish modern apartment there is one that wants a themed medieval or olde worlde build. For every one of those there is someone else who would rather a grunge or industrial build. From a commercial point of view it makes sense to cover all the bets and cater for as many preferences as you can.

However can you build something in a style that you don’t particularly ‘get’? I wanted to find out and the idea for The Ruined Abbey was born. My RL partner is very much into the grunge look and knowing me better than most was not at all sure that I could pull it off. There was now an added challenge :)

Whilst building the  Abbey I had to stop myself from falling into the trap of the cliche ruined church where vampires festooned with crimson velvet might always be in your peripheral vision. In fact I had to tear the build down twice over because I could virtually see Christopher Lee and Bela Lugosi watching me build from their comfy armchairs in the vestry ;)   I was desperate to build something where, if a vampire should take up residence then he would be much more earthy and rather less romantic!

In the end I found that I REALLY enjoyed building the Abbey. I am particularly proud of it because it is most definitely not my usual style at all and was so far out of my comfort zone that I hardly recognise myself as the creator at all. Sometimes it is a very good thing to push yourself and to try something different.

Maybe it is a vanity build. Maybe it will sell and maybe it won’t but for once I really don’t care. I like it and it will always be a special build to me simply because it is so different. I really hope you like it too.
